Paid promotion on Instagram costs one of two things in India in 2026. As an ad, about ₹45 to ₹400 per 1,000 impressions and ₹4 to ₹55 per click. As a creator's post, a median of ₹1,150 per reel from a creator with under 10,000 followers and ₹4,736 from one with 10,000 to 50,000, on live asking rates from Qolab.
Search for this price and almost every page that ranks is about ads. That is only half the question. "Paid promotion" is also what an Indian creator calls a sponsored reel, and what a shop owner means when they ask a local food creator to come in. This post prices both, then works out the point where one beats the other.
What does an Instagram ad cost in India?
About ₹45 to ₹400 per 1,000 impressions, depending on who you target and where the ad shows. upGrowth's Instagram ads pricing guide, updated 17 September 2026, gives these estimates from the campaigns the agency manages:
Category moves the price a lot. upGrowth puts beauty at ₹180 to ₹320 per 1,000 impressions, fashion at ₹140 to ₹280 and food and quick commerce at ₹90 to ₹220. A second agency, TML Agency, in a guide updated 23 May 2026, gives lower bands from its own client campaigns, ₹80 to ₹300 CPM overall and ₹40 to ₹90 for e-commerce, and prices an engagement-objective ad at ₹0.50 to ₹3 per like, comment or share.
Two things these pages agree on. Reels is the cheapest placement to be seen in. And retargeting people who already know you costs more than reaching strangers: upGrowth puts warm audiences at ₹250 to ₹800 per 1,000.
How much does it cost to boost a post?
Whatever daily budget you set, times the number of days. There is no fixed boost price. Meta sets a minimum per ad set and shows it in rupees on the budget screen; TML Agency notes you can run ads from ₹100 a day, and advises against it. The useful question is the smallest boost that tells you anything, and upGrowth's answer is ₹500 a day as a working floor for a test, about ₹15,000 over a month. A boosted reel costs roughly the same per 1,000 impressions as a Reels ad, so ₹500 buys somewhere between 3,500 and 11,000 impressions at the ₹45 to ₹140 range.
One cost people miss: boosts bought inside the iOS app carry an Apple service fee on top, so set them up in Ads Manager or on Android.
How much does a creator charge for a paid promotion?
A median of ₹1,150 per reel below 10,000 followers and ₹4,736 between 10,000 and 50,000, on Qolab's live asking rates. These are the rates 497 Indian Instagram creators set on their own public rate cards, taken on 10 October 2026 from accounts synced in the previous 30 days. They are asking prices, not what brands paid after negotiation.
Agency rate cards run higher. upGrowth's influencer pricing guide, updated 16 September 2026, quotes ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 for a nano reel and ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for micro. The gap is not a contradiction. Agency cards price a negotiated deal with the agency's margin inside it; the Qolab numbers are what creators themselves ask before anyone negotiates. If you book through Qolab, the brand pays the creator's rate plus a 10 percent fee, so a ₹4,736 reel costs ₹5,210 all in. For the creator's side of this pricing, see how much to charge per reel in India.
At how many views does a creator reel beat the ad?
Around 34,000 views for a micro reel, against the dearest Reels ad pricing. The maths is simple: divide the reel fee by the ad's cost per 1,000 impressions, then multiply by 1,000.
- **Micro reel at ₹4,736.** Against a Reels ad at ₹140 per 1,000, the reel is cheaper per view above about 34,000 views. Against a cheap ad at ₹45 per 1,000, it needs about 105,000 views.
- **Nano reel at ₹1,150.** Cheaper than the ₹140 ad above about 8,200 views, and than the ₹45 ad above about 25,600 views.
- **Mid reel at ₹8,317.** About 59,000 views against ₹140, about 185,000 against ₹45.
A reel's views are not the same thing as an ad's impressions, since one person can watch a reel twice, and a micro creator's reel does not reliably pass 34,000 views. So on views alone the ad usually wins, especially in a cheap category like food. The comparison a brand should actually run is the one upGrowth suggests for its own clients: cost per engaged view, with the creator "winning" when it comes within 1.5 times the paid figure and "overcharged" at 3 times or more. Our guide to what influencer marketing costs in India sets out the full budget around those creator fees.
What does the creator's fee buy that the ad does not?
Attention from a person the audience already follows, and a video you can buy the right to reuse. Kantar's Creativity in Context study, reported by Storyboard18 in July 2025, tested 1,350 ads in India. Viewers skipped ads carrying influencer content after 17.8 seconds on average, against 7.9 seconds for other branded content, and watched them 1.4 times longer.
The same study cuts the other way too, and it is worth knowing before you spend. Influencer content lifted aided brand awareness by 3 percent against 8 percent for digital ads, and only 7 percent of influencer-led campaigns reached the top 30 percent of ads for long-term brand building, against a 32 percent benchmark. Creators hold attention; ads build recall at scale. Most brands that do this well use both.
Per like or comment, which is cheaper?
The ad, by a wide margin. At Qolab median rates and the median likes plus comments each band's recent posts actually get, a creator reel costs about ₹11.93 per engagement from a nano creator, ₹10.04 from a micro creator and ₹6.37 from a mid-tier creator. TML Agency prices an engagement-objective ad at ₹0.50 to ₹3 per engagement.
That gap is the honest summary of this whole question. If you want likes, buy an ad. If you want a person your customers trust to say they used your product, and a video you can run as an ad afterwards, pay the creator. The one thing not to do is pay a creator fee and then judge it by the ad's metric.
A ₹10,000 plan, both ways
- **All ads.** Twenty days at ₹500 a day on a Reels placement. At ₹45 to ₹140 per 1,000, that is roughly 70,000 to 220,000 impressions, no content to show for it afterwards.
- **All creators.** Two micro reels at the ₹4,736 median, about ₹10,400 with Qolab's fee, or eight nano reels at ₹1,150. Fewer guaranteed views, two to eight videos you can reuse, and a tracked link on each to see what it sold.
- **Split.** One micro reel at about ₹5,200 all in, then ₹4,800 boosting that reel from your own account at ₹500 a day for ten days. This is the version the Kantar numbers argue for.
Whichever you pick, measure it the same way. For creator posts that means a link per creator, which is what our guide to tracking influencer sales with a link covers.
A brand account on Qolab lets you search Instagram creators by city and follower range, see each one's public reel rate and engagement rate, read straight from Instagram, before you invite them, and keep payment held until the content is live.
