You do not need a Mumbai or Bengaluru address to get brand deals in India. Brands are already running close to half their influencer campaigns in smaller cities, and engagement there runs higher than in the metros. What a creator in a small city is usually missing is not demand. It is being findable.
The distance between how much work exists outside the metros and how much of it reaches creators there is the whole subject of this post. It is real, it is measurable, and most of what closes it is unglamorous: how you describe yourself, what language you say you shoot in, and how quickly you reply.
Here is what the numbers say, why the deals still cluster in the big cities anyway, and the five things that change it.
Are brands actually hiring creators outside the metros?
Yes, and at scale. Kofluence's Decoding Influence: Annual Research Report 2026, published in May 2026 and built on data from more than two million creators, found that tier 3 and tier 4 cities now account for 43 to 48 percent of all influencer campaigns in India. That is close to half the work happening away from the cities that get talked about.
The performance case is stronger still. The same research puts average engagement at 4.5 to 5.5 percent in tier 3 and 4 markets and 3.5 to 4.5 percent in tier 2, against 3 to 4 percent in the metros. Social Beat data from January 2026, reported by The Established, found regional creators driving 35 to 40 percent better engagement in tier 2 and tier 3 markets.
So why does it still feel like the money is elsewhere?
Because it largely is. That same Social Beat data puts regional creators at 8 to 20 percent of influencer budgets, up from 3 to 10 percent. Real growth, still a small slice. Kofluence's cost figures explain most of the arithmetic: an average campaign in tier 3 or 4 costs a brand ₹35,000 to ₹90,000, in tier 2 it is ₹1.3 lakh to ₹1.6 lakh, and in the metros it is ₹3.8 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh.
Read those two facts together and the picture is plain. Creators outside the metros are getting hired often and paid modestly. The number of campaigns has moved faster than the money inside them.
What creators outside the metros charge, and what they deliver
Our own marketplace shows the same pattern from the inside. In August 2026, 199 of the creators signed up to Qolab had a city recorded. 62 percent of them, 124 creators, were outside India's eight largest metros (Mumbai, Delhi and the NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad), spread across 92 different cities.
Those rate and engagement figures come from the 132 creators who have connected their Instagram account, so followers and engagement are read straight from Instagram rather than self-reported. The non-metro median reel ask sits 26 percent below the metro median. The non-metro median follower count sits at about a third of it.
Read that carefully, because it is not a story about being underpaid. It is a story about what sets the price. Rates today track reach. Engagement, where creators outside the metros are ahead by roughly double, barely moves them. That gap is worth arguing in a negotiation, and it is an argument you only get to make once a brand has found you.
Why the deals still cluster in the metros
Discovery, almost entirely. Most brand shortlists in India still start from an agency's roster, a talent manager's list, or creators the brand has already worked with. All three were built out of the same handful of cities, so they keep returning the same handful of cities.
There is nothing to fix in your content here. What is fixable is whether a brand hunting for a Jaipur food creator or a Coimbatore skincare creator can produce your name at all. We broke that process down filter by filter in our look at how brands choose creators, and almost every filter in it runs before anyone watches a single reel.
Five things that make a small-city creator findable
- Write your city down everywhere a brand can read it: bio, profile, pitch subject line. A brand filtering for Indore is filtering on the word Indore, and it will not infer it from your footage.
- Name the language you shoot in. Kofluence found more than 62 percent of creators are being asked for more vernacular or regional-language content, and puts its own creator base at 68.2 percent Hindi and 23.9 percent other regional languages. If you shoot in Marathi or Telugu, that is a filter you can win, not something to hide.
- Say what your city buys the brand. A store visit, a regional launch, a local festival, a dealer network: hyperlocal work is the thing a Mumbai creator cannot deliver, so it belongs in the first two lines of a pitch, not the last.
- Price on the whole picture, not on your postcode. Our reel pricing guide for India works the same way outside the metros: start from real engagement, then adjust for deliverables and usage rights.
- Reply fast, then follow up once. Response time is the cheapest advantage on this list, and it is the one most often given away.
None of that needs an audience you do not already have. It needs you to be legible to a stranger holding a brief and a deadline.
How do you approach a brand from a small city?
The same way anyone does, with one change: treat the location as an argument, not a disclosure. Lead with the audience you reach and where it sits, rather than with an apology for not being in Mumbai. Our three pitch templates for Indian creators work unchanged, and the only edit worth making is a line near the top naming your city and the language you shoot in.
Then send more of them than feels comfortable. Budgets outside the metros are growing but still concentrated, which means the number of brands actively looking in your city on any given week is smaller than the number looking in Mumbai. Volume is how you cover that.
Where Qolab fits
Qolab is a booking marketplace where brands search Indian creators by niche and city, which is the exact filter this post is about. Connecting your Instagram gives you a profile carrying your rate and real engagement read straight from Instagram, so a brand two states away can shortlist you without a phone call. Payments are held safely until you deliver.
The spread is already there. In August 2026 there were 505 creators signed up from 113 cities across 25 states, and among those with a city recorded, 62 percent were outside the metros. That is the pool a brand filters when it goes looking.
Qolab is where Indian creators get found by brands. Connect your Instagram, get a profile brands can search by niche and city, see a fair rate band for your account, and keep payments held safely until you deliver. Sign up free at qolab.in.
